GERIATRICS ENGINEERING AT JOHNS HOPKINS

Clinical insight.
Engineering imagination.

An alliance developing technologies around the health, function, and independence of older adults.

A SHARED PLACE TO BUILD

Medicine and engineering,
side by side.

10,000 square feet at Bayview

Geriatrics Engineering brings clinicians, engineers, researchers, older adults, and caregivers into a shared research environment.

Co-directed by Peter Abadir and Najim Dehak, the hub includes research laboratories and a model apartment. Teams can study movement, cognition, usability, and the practical realities of technology in daily life.

The program connects geriatric medicine with speech and language processing, AI, robotics, and biomedical engineering.

MEASUREMENT IN MOTION

Everyday function.
New ways to see it.

Digital measurements can help researchers examine aspects of movement that are difficult to capture during a brief clinical visit. The lab explores video-based gait analysis and multimodal signals alongside biological measures of aging.

THE GEROTECH INCUBATOR

Start with a need.
Build an idea.

An interdisciplinary program within the Johns Hopkins Human Aging Project.

GeroTech brings trainees in medicine, nursing, engineering, and business together with faculty mentors to develop prototypes for aging-related health challenges. Areas of interest include mobility, cognitive health, social connection, medication management, and wound care.
